# Living through renovation work

Most homes cannot stop being homes because building work starts. The honest plan begins with what must remain usable, what will be out of service and where the household needs certainty.

## Decide whether staying is realistic

Some projects can be sequenced around an occupied home. Others affect the only bathroom, the main cooking space, heating or safe access strongly enough that temporary accommodation is the calmer choice. We discuss that before the programme is agreed rather than assuming the answer.

- Which rooms and services must remain available?
- Are there children, pets, mobility needs, home working or fixed routines to plan around?
- Which stages create noise, dust or temporary loss of water and power?

## Access, keys and normal working hours

Access arrangements are confirmed before the start. Where keys are required, the arrangement is recorded and limited to the named project team. Standard working hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, unless the project needs and the household agrees something different.

## Protection and the end-of-day reset

The work route and shared access are protected before materials and waste begin moving. The team carries out a proper tidy at the end of each day. That does not make renovation dust-free, but it makes the site boundaries and usable parts of the home much clearer.

## Plan the temporary version of the room

A kitchen project needs a temporary cooking and washing-up plan. A sole bathroom needs a facilities plan. Larger refurbishments need room sequencing, storage and safe routes through the home. These are project decisions, not small details left until the first week.

Tell us early if the home must stay occupied. That affects scope, order, programme and sometimes cost, so it belongs in the project plan rather than in a final reassurance sentence.
